Pre-Trip Activities

 

·       Scavenger Hunt Trip Board (see worksheet) 

 

·       Map Research - Using the maps provided, find the location of the German Farm from Hordt, the Irish Farm from County Tyrone, the English Farm from County Worcestershire, the American Farm from Eagle Rock, Virginia and the Bowman Farm from Timberville, Virginia.

 

Extension activity: 

After leaving their country and getting to a European Port, most immigrants sailed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With good weather, this trip took approximately 14 weeks.  Estimate the distance and time it took the immigrants from each country to reach Philadelphia.

What materials would you use to research the information needed to make a good estimation?

 

·       Making Predictions - Pre trip whole group or small group discussion topic.  Why do you think the people from Germany, Ireland, and England were immigrating to America?  Was it for economic, political, or social reasons?  After investigating the agriculture, social history and geography of the areas, what would be your predictions?  The time periods were:

Germany – early 1700s

Ireland – early 1700s

England – late 1600s

 

Extension Activity:

Make predictions as to why you think the settlers were migrating to the Valley of Virginia.

Why is the Valley of Virginia known as the Second Frontier?  Support your answer with 2 facts. 

 

·       What do you want to know! - Develop five questions as a group you want answered at the Museum.  Compare your answers after your trip. 

 

·       Making Choices! - You are leaving for a new country.  You do not know what your life will be like in this new country.  It is likely you will never see your family and old friends again.  You will be traveling on a crowded ship across the Atlantic Ocean for at least 14 weeks before you reach your destination.  Choose three items to take with you on your voyage to this new land which will be your new home.  Why are you choosing these items?

 

Extension Activity: (Role playing) Share your choices with a partner who is also traveling with you and explain your reasons for bringing the objects.  After discussing your choices with your traveling partner to you want to change your objects? 

 

·       That’s really cool!!! - Read the descriptions of the farm sites at the Museum.  Write or tell three facts about each site you found interesting.  Share your reactions with the class.
